Splitgate: Arena Reloaded is the result of Splitgate 2 not being released, re-released and ended up sticking to the previous gamefailed to reach all-time highs for the IP, sparking debate around the low player count on Steam (731 at the time of writing according to Steam Charts and 720 according to SteamDB). In response, developer 1047 Games made a statement Regarding the “Steam Charts Conversation”, essentially arguing that the number of players on Steam isn't everything.
“Steam Charts do not measure fun,” the statement begins. “They show one number, on one platform, at one time.” 1047 Games is definitely correct; the visibility of Steam's numbers versus the black boxes of consoles often breeds skewed discussions and an unhealthy and unhelpful obsession with imagined losers and winners, arbitrarily measured among concurrent players. Moreover, such a statement is, as it were, doomed to be, so to speak, not overloaded with victorious energy.
“Over the past six months, we have rebuilt Splitgate from the ground up because we believe in the game, our team and our community. The 1047 team remains committed to creating the best version of Splitgate possible.” It is worth noting that in June 2025 Team 1047 has become a little smaller following a “small” series of layoffs that also saw the founders waive salaries “as we fix.”
“To our wonderful community: thank you. Your feedback and enthusiasm have helped make Arena Reloaded better every day,” concludes 1047. “And to everyone who hasn't played yet: Arena Reloaded is free, the gameplay is the best it's ever been, and we'd love for you to join in and form your own opinions. A lot of passionate people have worked very hard on this.”
You'll never find me celebrating a tough time for the passionate people who worked very hard on the game, but you also won't find me surprised by this state of affairs because 2025 was a messy year for Splitgate. Perhaps it all started with CEO Ian Proulx. Summer Games Festival appearance, was remembered not by the news about Splitgate 2, but inflammatory comments about the FPS space and the choice of hat is, to put it mildly, tone deaf. But at best it was set up; it was Splitgate 2, criticized by fans as a downgrade, that really lifted it up. (Our Splitgate 2 review It was neither sharp nor bright.)
1047 Games agreed upon with players and brought Splitgate 2 back to beta to improve it, admitting it was “launched too early” and hoping it would do better the second time around. It didn't work just as the re-release gamble failed for games like Multiversus and Crucible. Then, in another mix-up, Splitgates were merged into Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, which, well, has now prompted a statement regarding the discussions on Steam Charts. Splitgate was highly acclaimed, at one point it was really popular on Steam and beyond, and now it's all just kind of murky.
