An Air India pilot was arrested at Vancouver International Airport last week as he prepared for a flight, with Transport Canada warning the airline it could lose its permission to fly if it does not comply with alcohol rules.
Transport Canada says the incident occurred on December 23 and will work with Air India and Indian aviation authorities to ensure “appropriate follow-up action” is taken.
Richmond RCMP say the arrest came after a “report of concern” involving an airline crew member.
An airport spokesman said the pilot was preparing for Air India's regularly scheduled daily flight from Vancouver to Delhi. The flight was delayed for several hours but later took off safely, they added.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and no further information would be released.
Air India did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In a statement, Transport Canada said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India has primary responsibility for regulatory oversight of Air India.
“Transport Canada remains committed to taking immediate and appropriate action if any safety issues are identified,” the Canadian agency said.

The statement said Canadian aviation regulations prohibit pilots or any other crew members from operating within 12 hours of consuming or under the influence of alcohol.
It says airlines cannot assign crews who are unable to perform their duties, and failure to comply could result in the suspension or cancellation of the airline's flying permits, as well as legal and other penalties.
