Canadian Food Inspection Agency suspends Goodfood’s safe food licence

The suspension follows months of leadership changes at the food delivery company.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has suspended the safe food license of meal kit delivery company Goodfood.

SuspensionThe law, which came into effect Dec. 30, prohibits the Montreal company from importing, exporting, manufacturing or packaging food products for sale in Canada.

The CFIA said the license was suspended due to problems with Part Four of the Safe Foods for Canadians Act, which states that importers cannot import and sell food products prohibited by the Canada Food and Drug Act. A license could be suspended for non-compliance, non-payment of fees or if there was a risk of harm to the public.

The CFIA notice does not indicate whether specific products sold by Goodfood comply with the law. No food was recalled as part of the suspension.

“If corrective action is not taken within 90 days of suspension, the license may be revoked,” the CFIA said.

As of Friday, Goodfood had not made a public statement or acknowledged the suspension of its social media channels that promoted new “15-minute recipe” meals sold by the company. BetaKit has reached out to the company for comment on the reason for the suspension, as well as the number of customers that were affected.

At its peak, the company's shares traded at $13. On Friday, $FOOD traded at just $0.32.
