LAGOS, Nigeria — The driver involved in the fatal car crash that injured heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and killed two of his friends in Nigeria has been charged, police said Friday.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged with dangerous and careless driving in the southwestern state of Ogun after the crash on Monday, police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi said in a statement on Friday.
The car carrying Joshua, Sina Gami and Lateef “Lutz” Ayodele crashed into a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that connects Ogun State to Lagos.
Kayode has been in custody since Thursday after being released from hospital and was subsequently released on bail of 5 million naira ($3,480), Babasei told The Associated Press.
The defendant was charged with four counts including dangerous driving causing death, careless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid national driving licence.
“He has been remanded in custody until he complies with his bail conditions,” a police spokesman said.
The trial was adjourned until January 20.
Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion, was released from hospital on Wednesday after suffering minor injuries in a crash that has raised questions about road safety in Nigeria. The boxer was released after being deemed clinically fit to recover at home, authorities said.
Joshua has family roots in Nigeria and spent time attending boarding school there as a child. He also holds Nigerian citizenship.
Joshua's promoter, Matchroom Boxing, told the AP on Thursday that the boxer will remain in Nigeria.
