Police Dispute Somali-Run Day Care Claiming Docs Were Stolen

Minneapolis police disputed a Somali day care center's claim that “important documents” disproving fraudulent activity were stolen.

Nokomis Day Care said a burglar broke into the building Tuesday through a kitchen in the rear of the facility, ransacked the main office and stole documents related to its operations, but police say there was no report. filedaccording to New York Post:

Nasrula Mohamed, manager of Nakomis Daycare, told reporters that sometime Tuesday, the suspect entered through the kitchen at the rear of the facility, damaged a wall and broke into the building's office. He said the alleged burglar stole “important documentation,” including children's enrollment information, employee IDs and checkbooks.

However, according to a preliminary report from the Minneapolis Police Department, “no casualties were reported to officers.” MPD noted that the center later sought additional information, but an updated police report was not immediately available.

Nokomis Day Care Center provided video of a hole in the wall of what may have been a utility room.

Mohamed said the robbery may have stemmed from Nick Shirley's recent viral post. where a citizen journalist visited various child care centers in Minnesota reporting fraudulent activity. Nokomis Daycare was not included in Shirley's report.

“This is devastating news and we don’t know why it is targeting our Somali community as this all happened because of one video made by a specific person,” he said.

Mohamed added that the center had received “hateful” and “threatening” messages since Shirley's report.

“It’s scary and exhausting,” he said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson also disclosed Earlier this month, half of the $18 billion in federal welfare funds that have supported 14 Minnesota programs since 2018 was lost to fraud.

“Minnesota has become a magnet for scams, so much so that we have a scam tourism industry where people come to our state solely to exploit and defraud its programs,” Thompson said. “This is a deeply troubling reality that all Minnesotans must understand.”
