HAINES JUNCTION — Earthquakes Canada says it recorded three earthquakes in the same region near the Yukon-Alaska border within minutes of each other, just over an hour before midnight on Dec. 31.
It said the first quake, a magnitude 5.7, struck Alaska, about 140 kilometers west of Haines Junction, South, shortly before 10:47 p.m. PT.
Earthquakes Canada said the earthquake was felt in Whitehorse, SC, but no damage was reported or expected.
It said a magnitude 5.0 aftershock occurred about 10:51 p.m. about 142 kilometers west of Haines Junction, followed by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake about 143 kilometers west of Haines Junction shortly before 10:55 p.m.
Earthquakes Canada says the third and final quake may also have been “lightly felt” in Whitehorse, but has not received any reports of damage.
On December 6, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred near the Alaska-Yukon border, about 120 kilometers west of Haines Junction.
