Elected Socialist Mayor of New York Zogran Mamdani was officially sworn in as mayor in a midnight ceremony by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

The early Thursday morning event was a private ceremony with Mamdani accompanied by family members at Old City Hall Station, a decommissioned subway station with deep historical roots.

In a press release, Mamdani's transition team said the midnight chant was chosen in a location that symbolizes that the subway system is “the lifeblood of New York City” and “a reminder of the city Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani fights for: a city built by and for New Yorkers.”

“When Old City Hall Station—one of the original 28 New York City subway stations—first opened in 1904, it was a physical monument to a city that dared to be both beautiful and to build great things that would change the lives of working people. These ambitions should not be a memory limited only to our past, and should not be isolated only by the tunnels under City Hall: it will be the goal of an administration fortunate enough to serve New Yorkers from the building above,” Mamdani said in a press release.

“When I take the oath of office at the station as the New Year dawns, I will make it a humbling opportunity to lead millions of New Yorkers into a new era of opportunity and be honored to continue our city’s legacy of greatness.”

According to his campaign, Mamdani used the Quran during his swearing-in ceremony, making him the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the first to take the oath of office using the Quran.

On Thursday afternoon, Mamdani will be publicly sworn in by independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders after another progressive ally, a Democrat, delivered the opening address at his 1 p.m. inauguration. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Typically, tickets for the inauguration are distributed to about 4,000 people, but Mamdani's transition team says all New Yorkers will be invited to the inauguration and the party that immediately follows.

The inauguration will take place at 1:00 p.m. on the steps of City Hall.
