Simu Liu goes viral because of how an expert detailed his Avengers: Judgment Day co-star Robert Downey Jr strange arrangement on set in a recent interview.
In case you missed it, Marvel officially announced last year that Robert would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom, in the upcoming film. Avengers: Judgment Day movie. This was a big deal because his original character, Tony Stark, who was essentially the foundation of the MCU, famously died in Avengers: Endgame back in 2019, so fans were excited about the idea of Robert returning to their screens.
Simu plays alongside Robert in Avengers: Judgment Dayreprising his role as superhero Shang-Chi, and in a new interview Colliderhe revealed that Marvel is making a serious effort to bring RDJ home.
Speaking to the publication, Simu explained: “Downey famously had this convoy of trailers and this whole area at base camp that we lovingly called Downey Land. And I remember the first time I was invited to Downey Land and I just showed up in this tent and it's all these beautiful Andy Warhol-esque pieces of art, except all the characters are Downey. I mean, he's so self-aware.”
“So he said hi to me, and I didn’t realize at the time that Downey Land had its own chefs, but I brought my set meal and he was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no. We don’t do that here,” Simu continued. “The chefs came in and laid out this full buffet and I thought, 'Oh, I'll take this away.' And then, as people walked by, I thought, “I can’t believe I’m having lunch with these people.”
Simu also revealed that the Downey Land cast casually walked around as scantily clad superheroes, recalling: “People are in their costumes in different states, some are still in full costumes. Some people have very uncomfortable costumes, so they like to take their clothes off, or it's three items, and they take off their clothes from two. We all just sit and talk about our lives and careers. Those are priceless, irreplaceable memories that I'll have for the rest of my life. My life.”
Needless to say, Simu's comments about Robert's quirky production immediately caught the attention of people online, with many happy with the way he described it. For example, one particularly viral tweet reads: “Simu is so real that he says it all in a complimentary way to get the point across, but he's covering his ass. He'd do well with email.”
Others took particular notice of how Simu described an “Andy Warhol-esque piece of art” depicting Robert in Downey Land in another popular post. joke: “‘Self-awareness’ isn’t exactly the wording I would use if I heard that anecdote, but sure.”
Another repeated: “What an interesting use of the word self-awareness.”
