FDA investigated more than 30 outbreaks in 2025

There have been at least 33 foodborne illness outbreaks across multiple states this year, affecting a total of 921 patients.

There may have been more outbreaks because the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not always report all outbreaks. In addition, there are likely many more cases than have been confirmed because many people do not seek medical care and those who do do are not always tested for foodborne pathogens.

The CDC estimates that for every confirmed patient in a salmonella outbreak, 29 people go undetected. For every confirmed patient in an E. coli outbreak, there are likely more than 26 people who remain undetected.

A total of 13 outbreaks from unidentified sources occurred, resulting in 339 people becoming ill. The FDA has closed 20 outbreak investigations.
