David Hort, the ministry's communications director, says it is important to remain patient when using snow plows, especially on highways, as they stop every 10 to 15 kilometers when it is safe for them to do so.
He adds that a snowplow stopped on the side of the road with its headlights on should be treated the same as any other emergency vehicle and reduced speed.
A recent accident on the Coquihalla Highway in British Columbia shows just how dangerous snowplow accidents can be. On December 23, a car attempted to drive past a snowplow, causing the main highway to be closed.
Hort asks people to drive slowly, stay away from snow plows, pay attention and drive according to road conditions. He says snowplows are there to help everyone and we need to let them do their job.
