Fire and Ash’ Dominates Again

James Cameron''Avatar: Fire and AshThe film continued to dominate the Korean box office between December 26 and 28, grossing $8.6 million with more than 1 million admissions, according to KOBIS, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council. The film has now grossed $32.5 million.

Zootopia 2” remained in second place, adding $3 million over the weekend and pushing its total to $50.3 million.

Third place went to South Korean romantic drama Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight, which debuted with a budget of $1.2 million. Directed by Kim Hye-young, based on the novel by Ichijo Misaki, it stars Joo Yeon-woo and Shin Si-ah in the bittersweet high school romance centered on a girl with anterograde amnesia whose memories are reset every morning. The film earned $2.5 million in its first five days.

Japanese animated release Crayon Shinchan the Movie: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers” finished in fourth place, grossing $773,000 for a total of $1.8 million.

Local family film “The Pororo Movie: Adventures in Sweet Castle” finished in fifth place, adding $147,000 to reach $1.2 million. Comedy drama “The People at the Top” continued to hold steady in sixth place, increasing its total earnings to $3.6 million. Directed by Ha Jung Woo and starring Gong Hyo Jin, Kim Dong Wook, Lee Ha Ni and Ha Jung Woo himself, the film follows a downstairs couple who are driven to the point of exhaustion by the constant noise of their upstairs neighbors. A tense dinner to resolve a problem quickly turns into an evening of harsh confessions and changing dynamics.

Stephen King The Life of Chuck adaptation opened in seventh place with $43,642, and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 added $38,622 for a total of $1.5 million.

Rounding out the chart were Japanese anthologies “Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 Part 1” and “Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 Part 2,” which earned $44,274 and $44,473, respectively.

Over the weekend of December 26–28, the top 10 films combined to gross $14.02 million, down slightly from last weekend's $15.2 million.
