NBA Jam debuted exclusively in arcades in 1993 and was ported to consoles the following year. Tournament Edition, released in 1994, is essentially an updated and expanded version of the original NBA Jam. As the name suggests, the main addition is the tournament mode. It's still 2-on-2 basketball, but Midway has added a third player to each team, allowing for substitutions throughout each game. The Tournament Edition also expands the categories of player statistics.

NBA Hangtime was developed by the same Midway team, but with a different name, as the NBA Jam title was sold to Acclaim Entertainment. Midway has expanded the player roster to five again and introduced a create-your-own-player feature, but NBA Hangtime is still an NBA Jam game.
