BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand and Cambodia said Saturday they have signed a ceasefire agreement to end weeks of armed fighting along their border over competing claims to the territory. It came into force at noon local time.
In addition to a cessation of hostilities, the agreement calls for a halt to further military movements on both sides and no violations of either side's airspace for military purposes.
Only Thailand has used airstrikes in combat, as recently as Saturday morning, according to a statement released earlier by Cambodia's defense ministry.
Another key clause requires Thailand – “once the ceasefire has been fully respected for 72 hours” – to repatriate 18 Cambodian soldiers it held captive from previous fighting in July. Their release was the main demand of the Cambodian side.
