OPINION: Recent Vatican document on artificial intelligence: Ancient and new “Old and New” is not a technical treatise, but a philosophical reminder: the development of AI poses fundamental questions about the nature of intelligence and the kind of people we must become to responsibly wield powerful tools in new ways.

“FAMILIAR FACES”: Amazon's Ring video doorbells are getting a major artificial intelligence (AI) upgrade, and it's already causing controversy. The company began introducing a new feature called Familiar faces to Ring owners throughout the US. Once enabled, this feature uses AI-based facial recognition to identify people who regularly show up at your door. Instead of a general alert that someone is at your door, you might see something much more personal, like “Mom is at the front door.” At first glance this seems convenient.
“FORWARD”: Recently launched GenII The tool for U.S. military personnel and War Department officials is an “important first step” in the future of warfare, a military expert said. This month, the Pentagon announced the launch of GenAI.mil, a military artificial intelligence platform powered by Google Gemini. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the platform is designed to give U.S. military personnel direct access to artificial intelligence tools that will help “revolutionize[e] how we win.”

“GO GAME”: FBI Director Kash Patel said Saturday that the agency is increasing its use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to counter domestic and international threats. In a post on X, Patel said the FBI is pushing its technology, calling A.I. “key component” your threat response strategy and stay ahead of the game.

WHO IS THE BOSS?: A week after Time magazine named the “Architects of Artificial Intelligence” Person of the Year, the latest Fox News National Poll There is broad support among registered voters for the careful development of artificial intelligence, but there is little consensus on who should regulate it. The poll, released Thursday, found that 8 in 10 voters favor a cautious approach to AI development to manage potential risks to the U.S., while 2 in 10 favor rapid development to stay ahead of countries like China.
