And England? Well, there will be a lot of introspection in the team for the rest of the tour, with lack of preparation and confused thinking about pitching contributing to the depressing mood. Ben Stokes, however, will not allow his side to wallow in Christmas boredom and will be determined to salvage some pride from the corpse of this tour before a thorough investigation is carried out into what exactly went wrong. Jacob Bethell will replace Ollie Pope at number 3 and Gus Atkinson will be recalled to the bowling unit as Jofra Archer is ruled out for the rest of the tour. And if the richly talented Harry Brooke could find a way to not give up his wicket and save a catch or two, so much the better.

England won the toss and will play on the first morning at the MCG. England will select the squad they announced a couple of days ago, with Bethell replacing Pope and Atkinson replacing the injured Archer. Australia will remain with Michael Neser, Jay Richardson and a returning Smith as captain, with Cameron Green dropping to seventh.
