Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive has no plans to expand despite the game's huge success.
Conversation with Edge – via Future's Knowledge newsletter – Co-founder, creative director and CEO of the studio Guillaume Broche said that the idea of developing the company is not “tempting,” adding that he is more interested in creating games than managing other people.
“I think it’s good to have boundaries when you’re a creative person,” Brosh said.
“This is the best way to become the best version of yourself. We could expand, we have a lot more money now, but I would say it's not tempting for us because even the management team and myself will have to be hands-on and do things for ourselves. We love creating games more than managing them, so we want to continue doing that. These last five years have been some of the best years of my life and I want to be that happy again.”
Brosh was also asked the secret to the huge success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33; the developer said that we need to look at the team that we have in the studio and move on.
“Every team is unique, and we built our processes around how we worked based on the talent we had,” he said.
“So I think the secret is to adapt the game to your team, not the other way around. And mostly it’s not about the processes, but about creating a game that you want to play. It's contradictory, but [try to] don't care too much about the players, because if you care about your game, that means you end up caring about the players too. For me, the best way to care for people is to do something sincere. If he feels like a man, [even] if there are small flaws here and there, it's forgivable. He just has to have a strong soul and personality.”
Claire Obscur: The 33rd expedition started in April. To date, more than 5 million RPG units have been sold. and received critical acclaim, including record nine wins at The Game Awards. The game was also recently disqualified from The Indie Game Awards due to the game having some content created using generative artificial intelligence, which is against the show's rules.
