Shooting involving toddler on Christmas morning under investigation in northwest Georgia

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a toddler found with gunshot wounds on Christmas morning.

The sheriff's office and GBI are investigating a shooting in Rock Spring, Georgia that occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on Christmas Day, according to Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson.

Officers were dispatched to a home on Tarvin Road, where they found the toddler with a gunshot wound to the head, Wilson said in a statement.

The child was rushed to TC Thompson Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and is expected to undergo surgery Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff said the child's father and infant sibling were present at the home during the shooting incident, with the father caring for the infant at the time.

The Walker County Department of Children and Family Services is now assisting the GBI and the Walker County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.

“We all grieve when a child is injured or dies,” Wilson said. “However, for this tragedy to occur on Christmas morning, emotions are heightened.”
