President Donald Trump brought a bit of politics to this year's Christmas Eve phone calls with children across the country, covering topics such as energy production and the 2020 elections.
Fielding calls as part of the annual US military meeting NORAD tracks down Santa At the event, Trump asked one caller what she wanted for Christmas.
“Not coal,” said the eight-year-old girl who called.
Trump jokingly corrected her, saying, “You mean clean, beautiful coal.”
“Sorry, I had to do it. I'm really sorry,” he added. “No, the coal is clean and beautiful. Please remember this at all costs. But you don't want clean, beautiful charcoal, right? What would you like?
Trump has long positioned himself as an ally of the coal industry. In April he signed a decree Designed to support the U.S. coal industry by relaxing regulations surrounding the extraction, leasing and export of what are considered the dirtiest fossil fuels.
And contrary to the old saying that Santa watches children to see how naughty or good they are, Trump told a caller from Oklahoma that the US government is watching Santa. NORAD—North American Aerospace Defense Command, a joint U.S.-Canadian operation—has tracked Santa Claus every year since the 1950s.
“We're tracking Santa all over the world. We want to make sure Santa is doing well,” Trump said. “We want to make sure that he doesn't infiltrate, that we don't infiltrate our country with a bad Santa.”
“Santa loves Oklahoma and so do I,” he added. “You know, Oklahoma was very good to me in the election. That's why I love Oklahoma. Never leave Oklahoma, okay?”
Speaking to a child in Pennsylvania, Trump brought up the 2020 election again, falsely claiming he beat former President Joe Biden there.
“I know Pennsylvania is great. In fact, we won Pennsylvania three times,” Trump said, later adding, “I bet your mom voted right.”
With some callers, Trump kept the conversation focused on the holidays and free of politics, not repeating remarks he made in 2018 when he asked a 7-year-old girl if she “still believed” in Santa Claus, saying at her age, “it’s marginal, right?”
After an 8-year-old North Carolina girl asked Trump on Wednesday if Santa would be angry “if we don't leave him cookies,” he told her: “I don't think he'll be angry, but I think he'll be very disappointed.”
“You know, Santa, he tends to be a little angelic. You know what the word 'cherub' means? A little ponderous,” Trump said. “I think Santa would like some cookies.”
Following the event, which was followed by calls to U.S. military personnel, Trump returned the focus to politics in the celebratory message he delivered. on “Social Truth”.
“Merry Christmas to everyone, including the radical leftist scum who are doing everything they can to destroy our country and failing,” he wrote, before listing the accomplishments of his first term, some of them exaggerated. “We are respected again, perhaps more than ever before. God bless America!!!”
