On Tuesday's Fox News Channel's “The Story,” US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Vladimir Putin never admitted that too many people died in the war in Ukraine, and “Russia was never willing to admit that, and they were always willing to suffer more than most countries. This kind of loss in the millions of victims would never be tolerated by any other country except Russia.”
Host Martha McCallum asked: “The only party that hasn't said it's disappointed by the number of killings and all the deaths, in many cases, of these young people, many Russian soldiers, many Ukrainian soldiers, is Putin. Has Putin ever said this is too much loss of life and I need to come to the table and we need to find negotiations so the war can end?”
Whitaker responded, “He didn't. But Russia has never been willing to admit it, and they've always been willing to suffer more than most countries. This kind of loss in the millions of casualties would never be tolerated by any other country except Russia. And at the same time, this is what they do for very little, if any, gain on the battlefield, and we have to accept reality as it is. I think that's what President Trump is really good at, even with all the chaos and death and destruction that we we see on the battlefield, he is still willing to follow through with the peace agreement and see if there is such an opportunity.”
