The St. Louis Cardinals have already made two separate trades with the Boston Red Sox this winter, with Sonny Gray and Wilson Contreras landing in Massachusetts.
And as surprising as it may seem, a third deal could very well happen. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Both teams have discussed a third trade that would send Brendan Donovan to Boston, but nothing close to materializing is happening at this point.

The Cardinals and Red Sox have also discussed a deal that would bring outfielder Brendan Donovan to Boston, according to people familiar with the matter. Donovan will likely play second base for the Red Sox, who have also been linked to Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Even if we're not close to the end yet, that means Chaim Bloom, the Cards' president of baseball operations, may not be done doing business with his former club.
Neither deal is close, but Donovan will almost certainly offer more value than Gray or Contreras, whom the Cardinals acquired in exchange for five minor league pitchers, including a combined $28 million in those deals.
For St. Louis, the opportunity makes sense because Bloom helped build the Cardinals' affiliate system and knows the Boston club's prospect base inside and out. We're hearing through the grapevine that the Cardinals are looking to secure Donovan's services from at least two top prospects.
If Donovan continues his career somewhere other than Boston, it could very well be with the Seattle Mariners or San Francisco Giants, who have been heavily linked to the versatile player in recent weeks.
