Wheat Kings sweep Cougars – Brandon Sun

All Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League action on Wednesday and Friday was postponed as a pair of snowstorms swept through southern Manitoba. These games will be rescheduled.

The fourth-ranked Wheat Kings (21-6-0-1) closed out the first half of the season with a home series against the Southwest Cougars.

On Sunday at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Cole Dupuis hit two sharpshooters and Reed Nichol, Benjamin Sveistrup and Matthew Dupuis also scored as the Wheat Kings jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first frame en route to an 8-1 victory.

Brandon also got goals from Nolan Peterson, the team's Elder, and a second from Nicol, who missed Saturday's game after being called up to the Everett Silvertips.

Cole Lobro scored for Southwest. Cooper Dryden made 30 saves for Brandon and Brady Shields blocked 32 shots for Southwest.

Uriah Musteil made 28 saves Saturday at J&G Homes Arena and Hudson Champaign's second-period breakaway goal was the winner in Brandon's 4-0 win.

Cole Dupuis, Matthew Dupuis and Easten Turco also scored for the Wheat Kings. Nate Brown blocked 31 shots for Southwest.

Brandon was unable to play his games against Parkland on Friday at Dauphins Credit Union Place and the Winnipeg Thrashers at GG Homes Arena on Wednesday.

The Wheat Kings won't return from Christmas break until Friday, January 2 at 7:30 p.m., when the Winnipeg Bruins visit. They will host Kenora Thistles on Saturday, January 3 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, January 4 at 2:00 pm.

The sixth-ranked Cougars (17-9-1-2) took on the Wheat Kings last week.

They will return from the break on Saturday, January 3rd at 8:00 pm and Sunday, January 4th at 3:00 pm when they host Eastman Selects.

YELLOW HUNGRY LEADERS

The ninth-ranked Chiefs (13-17-0-0) faced the first-place Winnipeg Wild (24-3-1-2) and the fifth-place Eastman Selects (18-8-1-1).

Sunday at Steinbach's Southeast Event Center, Nolan Kozak and Ethan Turczynski gave the Yellowheads a 2-0 lead at 11:28, but Eastman tied it four minutes later. Carter Brown and Alec Strachan then restored the Chiefs' two-goal lead, but Eastman scored three goals in 68 seconds midway through the third period to win 5–4.

Landon McGregor made 52 saves for Yellowhead and Carter Warren blocked 28 shots for Eastman.

Brandon Wheat Kings prospect Mark Munday scored a natural hat trick Saturday at Hockey for Everyone Stadium as the Winnipeg Wild went up 7-0 for an 8-2 victory.

Alec Strachan and Tyson Bridge responded for the Chiefs. Landon McGregor made 37 saves for the Cougars and Ardan Downey blocked 19 shots for the Wild.

The Yellowheads' game Friday at the Southdale Community Center against the Winnipeg Bruins has been postponed.

The Chiefs return from the break on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. when the Winnipeg Thrashers visit Shoal Lake Communiplex for a weekend doubleheader.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The eighth-ranked Rangers (15-8-4-0) did not play a scheduled game against Brandon and then visited 13th-ranked Kenora Thistles (1-24-0-1) at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre.

On Sunday, Noah Smigielski scored twice and Braden Budolowski, Risley Nepinak and Joshua Ware added solo goals in a 5-1 win over Parkland.

Carter Sigurdson made 36 saves for Parkland and Tyson Ponton blocked 46 shots for Kenora.

On Saturday, Dayson Martin scored twice in a four-round shootout as the Rangers cruised to a 5-4 victory.

Brodie Kaminski, Noah Smigielski, Noah Hanneson and Alex Campbell scored for Parkland in regulation. Eddie Person made 39 saves for Parkland and Keanu Waasaanquad blocked 38 shots for Kenora.

The Rangers will return from the break on Jan. 2 and 3 for a pair of home games against Central Plains.

GIRLS

YELLOW HUNGRY LEADERS

The Chiefs (7-8-1-1), tied for fourth place through three games, faced the Winnipeg Avros (7-8-2-0) and Central Plains Capitals (8-9-0-0) at the Shoal Lake Community Complex in the Manitoba U18 AAA Women's Hockey League.

Bailey Schwartz made a splash Sunday, stopping 47 shots for Central Plains as they defeated Yellowhead 3-0. Gracie Johnston made 21 saves for the Chiefs.

On Saturday, Hayley Chipelski, Emma Pollock and Jordan Woloski scored goals for the Yellowheads in a 5-3 loss to Winnipeg.

Kylie Hack made 23 saves for the Yellowheads and Adriana Almeida blocked 32 shots for Winnipeg.

The Chiefs return to the ice on Jan. 3 when they travel to Seven Oaks Arena in Winnipeg to face the Avros. The next day they head to the Hockey for All Center for some ice time to cap off their weekend in Winnipeg.

The third-ranked Wildcats (9-6-0-4) had their game postponed Friday against the Winnipeg Avros, but they will face the Central Plains Capitals at Hartney Arena.

On Saturday, Callie Franklin, Lily Wells, Lucy Waldner and Addison Henwood scored goals in Westman's 4-1 win over Central Plains.

Indigo Stone made 18 saves for Westman and Olivia May blocked 31 shots for Central Plains.

The Wildcats will return on Sunday, January 11th when they visit the Stonewall Veterans Memorial Sports Complex to play the Interlake Lightning.
