Breaking down my career chart Sigourney Weaver reflections on the 1999 satirical sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest and how she wishes the cult favorite had stuck to its original R-rated weapons (or rather, space lasers).
IN video interview with Vanity Fair, Stranger The star said she connected more with her character Gwen, a former actress who resented her objectification in the bygone space soap opera series, than with the tough-as-nails Ripley in Ridley Scott's classic 1979 film.
“I wanted to play a young woman in this world of fame who wants so badly to be a star and who, because she is beautiful and curvy and blonde, no one takes seriously – not even the commander. And I felt a huge compassion and sisterly connection with Gwen and Tony. [the fictional character she plays in the world of Galaxy Quest]”
Adding that she was “lucky” to work with an “amazing group” of colleagues, including Tim Allen, Tony Shalhoub and Alan Rickman, Avatar the actress said: “I wish they would release a director's cut of the film because at the last minute DreamWorks decided to release the film with some of the more difficult scenes Alan was in because he needed a children's film to counter [Columbia Pictures’] Stuart Little. And why don't they release the movie again with more of its very, very strange and wonderful scenes?
Of the long-discussed sequel that never materialized, Weaver said: “[Co-writer] Bob Gordon wrote the second one, but didn't give it to DreamWorks because he felt they missed their chance. And so we always wanted to do a sequel, but then when Alan passed away, we just lost heart. But it was an honor to write this love letter to the actors.”
Directed by Dean Parisot, the parody and loving tribute to series such as Star Trek The series centers on a group of alumni of a space TV show who are unwittingly drawn into an intergalactic conflict by aliens who believe their imaginary series is a depiction of real life.
While discussions about a sequel took place before and after Rickman's death from pancreatic cancer in 2016, potential follow-ups have since stalled. However, OG film producer Mark Johnson told Deadline earlier this year that Galaxy Quest The series is currently being written for CBS Studios..
