Major outage leaves more than 130,000 customers in San Francisco without power

Several areas of San Francisco were hit by a massive power outage on Saturday, leaving nearly a third of the city without power, according to PG&E's website.

outage map showed that the Presidio, Seacliff, Outer and Inner Richmond, Golden Gate Park, Panhandle, Inner and Outer Sunset, and parts of western Twin Peaks were affected. It was also shown that parts of the Western Addition and Downtown were affected by power outages.

Just before 15:00, PG&E website stated that about 30% of the city was left without electricity. More than 130,000 customers were without service as of Saturday evening, according to the utility provider.

PG&E said power had been restored to about 100,000 customers by 11 p.m. local time. The remaining 30,000 customers can expect power to be restored overnight.

The first power outage began around 9:40 a.m.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., the San Francisco Fire Department said it was battling a one-alarm fire at the PG&E substation located at 8th and Mission streets. Firefighters said they were working to cut off power and use carbon dioxide to extinguish the fire.

PG&E has not said what may have caused the outages.

BART said Powell Street and Civic Center stations were closed due to power outages. Mooney said its trains were kept out of Muni and Central Subways due to power outages.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced around 9 p.m. that two BART stations were reopening and Muni service was being restored. However, the lingering effects of the closure were expected to affect services.

“If you do not need to travel tonight, please stay off the roads and stay home,” Lurie said.

Lurie added that more officers will be stationed at intersections and in hallways to ensure safety.

This was reported by the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management. Disconnection may affect the operation of traffic lightsand drivers should view intersections as stops for four-way traffic.

Waymo said it had temporarily suspended service in the city due to the outage.

The utility company said there were no injuries.
