What happens in The Maid?

When Millie is first hired as a maid for the Winchester family, she thinks she has the perfect job. Her tasks include cleaning the house and caring for the family's seemingly spoiled daughter, Cece (Indiana Elle). She is given a room in the attic, although the door is strangely locked from the outside and has one tiny window that cannot be opened.

After her first night in the house, Millie wakes up to find the kitchen in ruins and Nina throwing dishes on the ground and screaming. Nina manages to calm down only when her husband Andrei runs into the kitchen and hugs her.

Although Nina appears to be a perfectly normal housewife when Millie first meets her, she quickly deteriorates and reveals that she is deeply troubled. Millie then has to deal with Nina's ridiculous requests.

Amid Nina's crazy behavior, Millie builds a relationship with Andrew, who understands how Nina functions. Their relationship quickly turns from platonic to sexual when they end up traveling to New York to see a play together and spending the night in a hotel room.

The story comes to a head when Andrew kicks Nina out of the house and says he plans to divorce her.

What's really going on with Nina?

After Nina's actions come to a head, Andrew decides to kick her out of the house and is left alone with Millie. They are living happily together when Millie accidentally breaks a plate that belonged to Andrew's grandmother.

Andrew locks Millie in her attic room and forces her to cut her stomach with shards of a broken plate as punishment.

The film's point of view suddenly changes from Millie's to Nina's. The story goes back in time to when single mother Nina first met Andrew and they had a quick engagement and wedding. Andrew always wanted a child of his own, but as viewers learn, there's a reason Nina didn't want to get pregnant.

This shows how picturesque the first few days of their marriage were: Andrew seemed like the perfect husband before he suddenly revealed his true nature.

Andrew becomes upset that Nina won't support the roots of her bleached blonde hair and locks her in the attic. He says that she must repent of the mistake she made and makes her pull 100 strands of hair from her head and put them in an envelope so that she can be released from the room.

Nina remains locked in a room for several days without access to food or water. In a feverish state, she finally gives in and completes her punishment.

For many years, Nina was forced to fight violence. She was afraid that Cece would be taken away from her if she tried to leave Andrew, since everyone thought he was the perfect husband and she was a crazy wife.

However, Nina comes up with a plan to hire a maid, Millie, a pretty young girl who has been repeatedly raped, to attract Andrew's attention. She knows she'll like Andrew and take care of her, just like he did with Nina.

How does “The Housekeeper” end?

The timeline returns to Millie, locked in the attic. She has just completed her punishment and is hatching a plan to get revenge on Andrew. She manages to trap him in the attic and turns the table against him, causing him to pull out his own tooth.

It is revealed that Millie was in prison for the murder of a man who tried to rape her roommate when she was in high school. With such a violent past, she is not afraid to stand up to Andrew's abuse.

Nina feels guilty about leaving Millie with Andrew knowing he would torture her, so she returns to the house to help her. She opens the door to the attic, thinking Millie is locked there, but actually lets Andrew out of the room.

The group physically fight each other at the top of the stairs before Millie manages to push Andrew over the railing, where he falls to his death.

After Andrew's death, the police come to the house to question Millie and Nina. The officer who interrogates them is suspicious because he appears to have been stabbed in the neck (which is what Millie did) and fell from the top of the stairs. However, the officer explains that she knew Andrew when he was alive.

The policeman's sister was once engaged to Andrew, but it is assumed that she broke off the engagement after discovering his true nature.

It is further implied that she decides to drop the case because she knew about Andrew's behavior.

Nina arranges Andrei's funeral, which is attended by his vain mother, as well as a community of parents who considered him an ideal husband.

Millie is there too and receives a large sum of money from Nina to start a new life. However, the film ends with Millie being interviewed to become a maid again. The woman says that Nina recommended her, and as they talk, Millie sees that there are bruises on her body. It is implied that Millie's services are needed for more than just housekeeping.

Will there be a sequel?

“Millie isn't done yet,” Feig tells TODAY.com about the story's future.

The Maid is part of a trilogy, the next book, The Maid's Secret, follows Millie as she begins working for a new family. The third is called “The Maid Is Watching.”

“We kind of get a sense of where Millie is going and what's going on.” Sweeney told TODAY.com. “But I want Nina back in her life. I feel like Millie really needs Nina.”
