Inter Miami re-signed the striker Luis Suarez The 2026 MLS Cup champions were announced on Wednesday.
The Uruguay international has 17 goals and 17 assists in 50 appearances for the team in 2025. Inter Miami became a buzz saw after head coach Javier Mascherano sent Suarez to the bench. Replaced by Mateo Silvetti following Miami's 2–1 loss to Nashville in the first round, Miami won the next four games and outscored their opponents 16–2 en route to the MLS Cup title.
Suarez, who turns 39 in January, has 42 goals and 29 assists in 87 appearances since joining Inter Miami ahead of the 2024 season. Late in his professional career, he suffered from numerous knee problems. say in 2023 that he often could not play without painkillers.
Miami co-owner Jorge Mas said earlier this month that Suarez would make a deal if he wanted to return.
“Luis deserves to be able to make that decision, to be able to walk out the front door and be recognized by the club the way he should be,” Mas told reporters on December 6. “And if he decides to stay at the club for another year, that would be great. I would like Suarez to stay.”
Only Suarez and double MLS MVP Lionel Messi remains in Miami's “core four” of former FC Barcelona stars, while Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba retire after the 2025 playoffs.
The Herons are scheduled to open their new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, on April 4 against Austin. The club will play its first five games of the 2026 season away from home.
