One of my most vivid memories of Bremen was putting down my map and getting lost in the tiny streets of the Schnoor district, Bremen's oldest district. Walking through the main square, you are transported back in time to densely populated streets lined with buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries, so small and colorful that you will feel like you are walking into a fairy tale.
Shnoor's buildings are filled with unique art galleries, cozy cafes, mom-and-pop shops and incredibly beautiful restaurants. As you stroll through the area (which was minimally damaged during World War II), you'll come across quirky sculptures and artwork along the narrow streets. Stay at Jeweler StichnotA unique store of handmade jewelry that will be a wonderful souvenir or gift. After your walk, stop by a cute little cafe for a relaxing tea and delicious cake. Another must-see attraction in Bremen is the stunning Marktplatz. Bremen's main square, surrounded by Gothic architecture, is a feast for the eyes. In the center of the square you will find the 18-foot tall statue of Roland, Bremen's most famous knight, which was built in 1404 and remains the city's symbol of freedom and rights. Other notable attractions of the Market Square are the numerous shops in ornate buildings, as well as the impressive Bremen Town Hall and the towering Bremen Cathedral. Don't forget to stop by the bronze statue of the Bremen Town Musicians near the town hall, created in 1953 by Gerhard Marx as a tribute to the famous fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.

After spending some time in Bremen's Old Town and strolling its charming streets, be sure to recharge your batteries with some delicious German cuisine. Under the Bremen Town Hall you will find an exquisite Ratskelaar a restaurant that is as impressive as its 600-year history. When you open the large doors, you are greeted by an underground cave filled with old bookcases now used as private dining rooms, massive wooden wine barrels adorned with decorative crests, and magnificent vaulted ceilings.
One of my favorite places to relax in Bremen was the gardens of the Mühle am Woll mill. Situated on a hill in Wallanlagen Park, surrounded by colorful flowers, a building that was once used as a mill is now home to a wonderful restaurant in one of Bremen's most picturesque locations. One of the best times of year to stroll through the park is during the fall months, when the green trees turn vibrant shades of orange, red and yellow.
