Collaborating with celebrities is nothing new for Fortniteeven if they're usually based on popular musicians or a long list of video game streamers you may never have heard of. There is also a newest joint project in which Kim Kardashian joining Fortnite Universe as the latest game in the Icon series.
Yes, the same Kim Kardashian whom the world has been following for many years. Late last week, Epic unveiled two custom skins for the reality TV star, aspiring lawyer and business mogul who currently stars in a Hulu series. Everything is fair. This drop is not affiliated with the show and does not appear to be related to Kardashian's Skims shapewear line, although Skins definitely has clothes similar to the ones she sells.
More important than why they are here, however, is how good they are. At any time Fortnite adapts a real person to the skin, the end result is usually the same. They do resemble the intended person, but thanks to the cartoonish art style that is clearly Fortniteoften with less detailed characteristics.
Kardashian skins do not suffer from this problem. In fact, they're amazingly detailed, right down to Kardashian's body and head shape, her signature hairstyles, and the makeup and fashion looks she's known for. Simply put: her skins are simply So good. Why is this?
There are several possibilities. For starters, she's one of the most recognizable faces on the planet, and whether you're a fan of hers or not, you might be conjuring up images of a Kardashian right now. Such easily recognizable people will always stand out a little more, especially someone who has not left the public consciousness for over a decade.
Beyond that, however, it's highly likely that she and her team have received final approval for the skin. After all, Kardashian herself is the brand being sold here, and she's probably fiercely protective of it. Moreover, she told the publication in an interview Elle that her son Saint is playing Fortnite. If his mom is going to be added to the game, it has to be a great skin, right?
Another possibility is that Epic Games is hoping to reach a different audience than those already playing. Fortnite. This drop is addressed directly to Kardashian fans, not FortniteX. Why else would Kardashian even give a promotional interview for a collaboration to a women's fashion magazine?
With that in mind, Epic should spend a lot of time getting these skins right if they want to attract new audiences. And it looks like they did just that. And this is before setting up the player.
There are two skins in the store – regular and iconic – and each has a ton of styling options. You can choose options for outfits and hairstyles, as well as accessories and the colors of your clothes. You really can create any Kim you want.
What remains to be seen is whether this new approach to collaboration skins—a little more realism, lots of customizable options—will extend beyond the Kardashians. Now that this particular genie is out of the bottle, putting him back in may be difficult. Let's customize each skin, okay?
Now excuse me while I go to the island and take advantage of the surfing. Emotion “Bread Internet” on everyone I see, the way Kim Kardashian intended.
