Director-actor Rob Reiner Two people and his wife, Michelle, were found dead Sunday at Reiner's Los Angeles home, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation.
The official could not publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Investigators believe they were stabbed and a family member is being questioned by investigators, the official said.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a request for medical assistance shortly after 3:30 p.m. and found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead inside. Reiner turned 78 in March.
Homicide-Robbery detectives were investigating an “apparent homicide” at Reiner's home, said Capt. Mike Bland of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Los Angeles authorities have not confirmed the identities of the people found dead at a residence in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood on the city's west side, home to many celebrities.
Reiner has long been one of Hollywood's most prolific directors, and his work included some of the most memorable films of the 1980s and '90s, including This is Spinal Tap, A few good men, When Harry Met Sally And Princess Bride.

His role as Meathead in Norman Lear's classic 1970s television series. All in the familyalong with Carol O'Connor's Archie Bunker, brought him fame and earned him two Emmy Awards.
Relatives of Lear, the legendary producer who died in 2023, said they were shocked by the news.
“Norman often called Rob his son, and their close relationship was extraordinary to us and to the world,” the Lear family said in a statement. “Norman would like to remind us that Rob and Michelle tried every day to make this country a better place, and they did it through their art, their activism, their philanthropy and their love of family and friends.”
Messages to Reiner's representatives were not immediately returned Sunday evening.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called Reiner's death a devastating loss for the city.
“Rob Reiner's contributions resonate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy while fighting for social and economic justice,” Bass said in a statement. “An accomplished actor, director, producer, writer and active political activist, he has always used his talents to serve others.”
The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner has been married to photographer Michelle Singer Reiner since 1989. They met when he was a director. When Harry Met Sally and they have three children.
Reiner was previously married to actor and director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner died in 2020 at the age of 98, and Marshall died in 2018.
Homicides are rare in the Brentwood area. The scene of the incident is about a mile from the house where OJ Simpson wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were killed in 1994.
