Carl Carlton, ‘Bad Mama Jama’ and ‘Everlasting Love’ Singer, Dies

Carl Carlton, the legendary singer known for his hits “She's A Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)” and “Everlasting Love”, has died. He was 73.

His son Carlton Hudgens II confirmed his father's death on his Facebook December 14.

“Rest in peace daddy to the legendary singer Carl Carlton from the song “She's a Bad Mama Jama.” Long hard struggle in life and you will be missed,” Hudgens II wrote, also specifying his father’s birthday as May 21, 1952.

Additionally, on his Facebook Story, Hudgens II shared a photo of his singer father, writing, “RIP Dad, now you can finally rest. Always love you.”

The cause of death is not reported at this time.

The R&B and funk star, born Carlton Hudgens, began his career under the name “Little Carl Carlton.” His first singles included “I Think of How I Love Her” and “I Love True Love”, followed by “So What” and “Don't You Need a Boy Like Me”.

The Detroit native's cover of Robert Knight's “Everlasting Love” became his biggest hit, peaking at number six on the charts. Billboard Hot 100 in November 1974. “She's A Bad Mama Jama” also peaked at number 22 on the 1981 chart and earned him Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

He has released several albums throughout his career, Carlton's most recent being “God Is Good” in 2010.

Upon learning of his death, the funk band Confunkshun paid tribute to the singer. Facebook.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of the legendary Carl Carlton. His voice, talent and contributions to soul and R&B music will forever be a part of our lives and the soundtrack of many memories,” they wrote. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and fans around the world. Rest in power, Carl. Your legacy lives on.”

DJ D-Nice also remembered the icon, writing on his Instagram: “Wow… Rest in peace to the legendary Carl Carlton.”

“This is one of those timeless classics that I really enjoy spinning,” he wrote alongside a photo of “She’s A Bad Mama Jama” on vinyl. “”She's built, she's complicated, she's got all the curves a man could want…” Part of the soundtrack of my youth. Thanks for the music! Gone, but forever in rotation.”
