As you can see in the trailer above, which is gloriously full of marching armies, version 1.0 of Days Without Dawn has arrived. Nexus Mods as of Friday. As our friends noted on European video gamerwhich, apparently, contributed a bunch of people the decision to launch Attila over the weekend just went away.

“Over ten years of passion and dedication. Countless people contributed to this project, and they all believed in it every step of the way. From testers to moderators, developers to hosts, interns, writers, voice actors and translators… it all led to this moment,” the mod team wrote after reaching this milestone.

This 1.0 update adds the full War of the Ring campaign mode that modders have spent the last decade creating, with nine factions for you to choose from as you take to the landscape of Middle-earth and fight for something Gollum loves dearly. There is the possibility of a single or multiplayer campaign. The modders say you can expect an experience that's “based on the books while still relying on the visuals of the films.” In keeping with this, cameos from Aragorn, Saruman, Sauron and Gloin – all resembling their film selves – have been added to a list that already appears to include Legolas and Boromir.

The modders note that the Eriador region remains “desert and unplayable” at the time of this release, but they have plans to include it in the campaign in the future. Additional playable factions, more “iconic settlements” and further development/polishing also remain on the to-do list.

As someone who hasn't yet taken the plunge and tried to talk myself into sitting down and reading all the Lord of the Rings books, I'm no expert on whether this is the dream of every bell ringer around the world. That said, even I can see how great it would be to bring some troops into TWar as Sean Bean, considering how fun it was to fight alongside him in the comparatively very intense battles in Oblivion.
