upcoming sci-fi game from former Mass Effect veterans called Exodusis not currently being created using any generative AI technologies, although the developer would not mind changing his mind in the future.
Mass Effect veteran Chad Robertson, who is now the co-founder of Exodus Archetype studio, said eurogamer “We have no plans to use generative AI for any elements of it, but we reserve the right to change this if something requires it in order to get a game of the quality we need, or on the timeline or budget we need.”
This topic arose because Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey, who plays the lead role in Exodus, also has investments in audio company Elevenlabs, and he signed an agreement with the firm to allow artificial intelligence to generate his voice in certain situations.
“No no. Everything that's in Exodus—100 percent of what's in Exodus—is a custom voice-over recording just for us,” Robertson explained. “He has a completely separate proprietary deal that he developed with Elevenlabs, which is one of the most well-known AI voice generation tools that is used by other video game companies. So people can use his voice in a different way in non-specialized voice-over sessions. It has some really strict rules about how it can be used.”
Archetype's connection to McConaughey is apparently “very specific” and does not include generated voice lines. The McConaughey we hear in the game will presumably be the McConaughey who appeared in the recording booth. As for the studio's long-term position on technology, “we want to be smart technologists and we want to make great games,” Robertson added. “And if, for reasons of cost or quality, this becomes something that becomes more acceptable and more common, I think we're going to have to be smart and smart about how we embrace it ourselves.”
The new sci-fi RPG from former Mass Effect developers shares “some DNA” with BioWare's beloved series, as well as Sony's Horizon and Nintendo's Metroid.
