He was the rap-battled “Doctor of Thuganomics”, a spunky military upstart with dog tags and – proving that even the best can still make mistakes – the world's least convincing nickel, and this Saturday, 23 years after his SmackDown debut in 2002, John Cena and his comrades will ride around for the last time.
Gunther earned the right to take on the man who brought us Attitude Adjustment and Five Moves of Fate in his swan song by winning the Last Time Now tournament, defeating Jae'Von Evans, Carmelo Hayes, Solo Sikoa and Los Angeles Knight. The former two-time world heavyweight champion, by the way, sent Goldberg into retirement in July.
As is usually the case, the fairytale ending was not intended for Goldberg, even though at 48, Cena is 10 years his junior, a recent Intercontinental Champion, a 17-time world champion and a Triple Crown winner. He is also one of the most iconic WWE Superstars of all time, arguably the promotion's greatest asset ever, and has repeatedly stressed that there will be no comeback – this is truly the last dance.
