Multiple people shot at Brown University in Rhode Island, police say | Rhode Island

Several people were shot and killed Saturday on the grounds of Brown University in Providence. Rhode Islandpolice said as the school sounded a shooting alert and urged students and staff to take cover during the second day of final exams.

Police did not immediately release details about the condition of the victims or the circumstances of the shooting.

Officials initially said a suspect was in custody, but then said that was not the case and police were still searching for the suspect or suspects.

Students were asked to shelter in place as police arrived on the scene and people were told to avoid the area. Officials cautioned that the information remains preliminary as investigators work to determine what happened.

Police are actively investigating and continuing to gather information from the scene, said Christy DosReis, public affairs director for the City of Providence.

The incident reportedly occurred outside the Barus and Holly building, a seven-story building that houses the school's engineering and physics department, according to the school's website. It includes 117 laboratories, 150 classrooms, 15 classrooms and 29 laboratories.

Officials were still gathering information from the scene, said Christy DosReis, the city's communications director.

The Ivy League school is a private, nonprofit institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and just over 3,000 graduate students, according to its website.

Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.
