Daniel Jones underwent surgery Tuesday in New York that is expected to sideline him for six to eight months, giving Indianapolis Colts Sources told ESPN that the quarterback will be fully conditioned by the start of training camp next summer.
Jones is still believed to play next year in Indianapolis, but his contract expires after this season and he is set to become an unrestricted free agent.
Jones and the Colts did not discuss a contract extension while the quarterback was enjoying a resurgence in the season and leading Indianapolis to the top of the AFC South. Last Sunday, Jones fell to the ground, slammed his helmet in frustration and realized he had torn his Achilles – even before an MRI confirmed it.
Both Jones and the Colts, who have been very happy with each other, have important decisions to make. Jones is expected to be interested in returning to Indianapolis, but he may have other options. The Colts are expected to try to re-sign Jones, but price will be an issue.
The Colts may decide to franchise tag Jones, which is expected to fetch around $45 million to $46 million this offseason, according to league sources.
But for now, Jones will focus on recovering from Achilles surgery and preparing for the 2026 season.
Jones has demonstrated the ability to heal quickly in the past. Playing as a defender for the team New York Giants Jones tore his ACL in 2023 but returned for the start of the 2024 season.
The Colts (8-5) have lost four of their last five games after a strong start, falling out of the AFC South lead and finishing eighth overall in the seven-team playoff.
