Canadians were behind some of the biggest highlights of The Game Awards 2025

A lot happened during the Game Awards 2025.

Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 won almost every award for which it was nominated, including Game of the Year. Capcom gave us two long-awaited announcements: one confirming Leon S. Kennedy as co-director Resident Evil: Requiem And the other is the disclosure of the first new Mega Man game since 2018. A new highway tomb Raider game and remake of the first part of the series. Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios has announced a new Divinity.

But what you may not realize is that many of the show's most memorable moments came from Canadians. (And not just Markham, Ontario-born producer and host Geoff Keighley.) From Brand New Star wars from an original sci-fi RPG to a guest starring role from a legendary director, the Canadian developers put on a killer night at The Game Awards. Here's a breakdown of what they showed off.

Belgium-based Larian Studios, which has a support team in Quebec, won the award for Best Community Support. Baldur's Gate 3. The beloved developer has continually added free content and other updates to the mega-popular RPG since its launch in 2023, so this is a well-deserved win.

Battlefield 6

advisors Battlefield 6developed by the global team at Battlefield Studios, which includes Montreal's Motive, won the award for Best Audio Design. Considering it's an exciting first-person shooter with all sorts of realistic gunshot and explosion sounds, it's definitely a worthy win.

Digital extremes

Fan favorite London, Ontario. During the exhibition, the developer had not one, but two games. Of course, there was also a proprietary offer, Warframewith perhaps the most surprising trailer imaginable. As creative director Rebecca Ford and director of community and live events Megan Everett admitted on stage, it can be difficult to get the hang of it. Warframegiven how much there is to this. So naturally, DE asked none other than the famous German director and actor Werner Herzog to record a video explaining that Warframe is. Incredible.

There was also a short trailer for another DE game, a fantasy action RPG. Soulframewhich is still in pre-alpha stage. The short video hints at Alora, Empress of Eldveil, a character DE recently confirmed she will be voicing Baldur's Gate 3 star Jennifer English. (Coincidentally, English also won a Best Actor award for her role as Mael in Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 last night.)

Digital extremes are one of Canada's most talented and beloved teamsso it's great to see him doing so many cool things.

Exodus

At first glance, what you might remember most is the fact that Exodus This is a game with Matthew McConaughey. You know, the one that brought him to The Game Awards in 2023. But what you probably don't realize is that some of the key people behind the sci-fi RPG are Canadian alumni of BioWare Edmonton.

Yes, although Archetype Entertainment, owned by Wizards of the Coast, is based in Austin, Texas, co-founder and chief James Ohlen was one of the main designers Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the first two Baldur's Gate games. On top of that, Exodus production director Drew Karpyshyn served as lead writer Knights of the Old Republic And Mass Effect And Mass Effect 2. Both Olen and Karpyshyn eventually went to BioWare Austin to work on Old Republic MMORPG before leaving to launch Archetype with other Austin colleagues such as Chad Robertson (co-founder and general manager) and Chris King (creative director).

BioWare DNA seems to be prevalent in everything we've seen so far. Exodus. The game follows a young traveler named June who must journey into the galaxy in hopes of finding a way to stop the mysterious Rot from destroying their home. With a choice-driven narrative centered on time dilation, upgradable sci-fi weapons and abilities, and all sorts of companion and romance options. Exodus looks like he could be a great spiritual successor Mass Effect.

More information about Exodus can be found in our preview from Archetype.

Forest 3

Vancouver's End of the Night Games surprised viewers with the third game. Forest game, and this one takes the player from Earth to space. It still retains the creepy atmosphere that characterized previous games, but this time you'll encounter alien creatures and use sci-fi weapons to fight back.

However, many details have not yet been confirmed. For example, the plot of the game itself remains secret, as does the release window. We also don't know Forest 3 will have multi-user functionality like its predecessors.

South of Midnight

South of Midnight from Montreal Compulsion Games won the Games for Impact award. Associate Narrative Director Farah Nixey and Senior Producer Diane Guillemont took the stage to give a heartfelt acceptance speech. They also confirmed that South of Midnight will be released in the spring on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

In case you missed it earlier this year, this is delightful adventure game is the story of Hazel, a young woman from the American Deep South who goes in search of her mother after a deadly storm. This is one of the most visually stunning games in recent memory, telling a beautiful story about family, history and empathy. I highly recommend it!

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic

Perhaps the most unexpected discovery of the game was a completely new single-player mode. Star wars A role-playing game set in the era of the Old Republic. The cinematic trailer follows a Force user as he navigates a time of great change.

Although any Star wars The role-playing game could be intriguing, what caught the attention was the fact that it belongs to none other than Casey Hudson. He's an Edmonton resident who has served as creative director on such BioWare classics as original KOTOR And Mass Effect trilogy, four of the most beloved games of all time. The last we heard from Hudson was that his studio Edmonton's Humanoid was closed last year by parent company NetEase while working on the original sci-fi IP.

But now we know that Hudson has opened another studio in the Alberta capital called Arcanaut Studios. It also has offices in Kelowna, British Columbia. Although we don't know how many of Hudson's old colleagues are with him, exclusive interview with StarWars.com noted that the game “is created by people who helped shape [the] heritage” KOTOR

However, publisher Lucasfilm noted that development of the project for consoles and PC is in the “early stages.” It's also a spiritual successor KOTOR and not any kind of sequel or continuation. Still, knowing that one of Canada's most legendary developers is returning to a galaxy far, far away is incredibly exciting.

Street Fighter (2026)

We have received the first trailer for the film adaptation of the legendary Capcom game from Legendary Pictures. Street fighter row. It's quite exaggerated, but it's probably what you'd expect from a movie like this. Almost the entire cast was present (with the exception of Balrog actor 50 Cent – yes, you read that right), and this is where the Canadian angle comes into play. Fan-favorite character Chun-Li is played by Vancouver's Callina Liang (who starred in the film directed by Steven Soderbergh this year). Presence with Lucy Liu).

The rest of the cast that appeared includes Noah Sentin (Ken Masters), Andrew Koji (Rryu), Jason Momoa (Blanka), Roman Reigns (Aku), Cody Rhodes (Git), David Dastmalchian (M. Beeson), Andrew Schultz (Dan Hibiki), Vidut Jammwal (General), Eric Andre (Don Saule). Orville Peck (Vega), Olivier Richters (Zanief), Hiroki Goto (E. Honda) and Mel Jarnson (Cammy).

Street fighter will be released in theaters on October 16, 2026.

Warlock

The Canadians really did some hard work for Wizards of the Coast at The Game Awards. Near Exodusthe media giant demonstrated a new Dungeons and Dragons adventure game called Warlock. It was created by the Montreal-based Invoke team of about 200 people, which includes alumni from Ubisoft, Eidos Montreal and other studios.

In the game, you control Kaatri, the titular mage, who makes a deal with a patron and embarks on a personal journey with high stakes. At The Game Awards, Alberta-born actress Tricia Helfer (Battlestar GalacticaEDI in Mass Effect games) also took to the stage to confirm that she is playing Kaatri.

Invoke didn't reveal anything else about the plot, but did show how spellcasting affects every aspect of the gameplay, be it combat, exploration, or puzzle solving. The team was also quick to point out that while the game is heavily inspired by the world D&Dit doesn't try to recreate the desktop experience, unlike Larian Baldur's Gate 3.

Invoke says the full gameplay reveal will take place in the summer of 2026, ahead of the planned launch in 2027. To find out more, check out our preview with Invoke.
