Melissa was 20 when she first took on the role of the iconic character in 1996, and the show ran until 2003.
On top Sabrina popularity, Melissa starred in a romantic comedy Drive me crazywhich was released in 1999, and the actor, who is now 49 years old, has been open for a long time that the premiere of this film in New York was the “worst day” of her life.
In case you missed it, Melissa posed for men's magazine Maxim for a promotion. Drive me crazywhich her bosses at Nickelodeon didn't like. In fact, she says, at a party after the premiere, she was told that she was being fired from Sabrina and filed a lawsuit.
Additionally, Melissa was also fired from her role in Scary movie that day and also broke up with her boyfriend.
Talking about Pod meets the world Back in 2023, Melissa said: “I cried all evening. It was one of… At the time, I thought it was the worst day of my life.”
“I broke up with the boy that night because I decided I didn't want to be in a relationship with him anymore, and it was a little heartbreaking,” she explained. “I was with my family, we were doing so much press, I haven’t slept since 4 in the morning.”
“I had to go and make a film Scary movie in Vancouver, I was supposed to be the outgoing, bubbly, big-breasted girl who got killed or something in the beginning,” Melissa continued. “So they put me in a limo and they took me away and I just broke up with my boyfriend and I’m crying and upset.” My younger brother was [at the premiere]and I remember just saying, 'I'll never see him,' and I had to spend about 10 minutes with him and I had to leave my family.”
“I got a call in the limousine,” she added. “They were like, ‘You got fired from the movie, you can come back to the party,’ because there was a party at Planet Hollywood.”
When she got to the party, things went from bad to worse, with Melissa adding: “My lawyer shows up and says, 'Did you do a photo shoot for Maxim magazine?' I was like, “Yeah, I did it.” They're like, “Well, you got sued and fired from your show, so don't talk to the press, don't do anything.”
Luckily, nothing came of the Maxim cover drama because the people who wanted to sue her “had no basis to fall back on.” She explained: “What happened was that the magazine said, 'Sabrina, your favorite witch without [a stitch]…” I've never heard of anyone being on the cover of a magazine and not using their name; they used “Sabrina”.
“It was written in my contract that I would never play this character. [of Sabrina] naked,” Melissa said. “So they thought I was breaking the rules because I was playing this character.” No, it was supposed to be an advertisement for my film; it wasn't supposed to be a character. I had no control over what they wrote on the cover.”
And now Melissa has revealed some more about that chaotic night, even remembering the outrageous reason why she was fired from the company. Scary movie.

“I was driving to the airport and I went back to the days when there was a cell phone in the limousine and they called me and said, ‘Turn around, come back to the premiere. You were fired from the film,” she continued. “So, I was already crying and waiting for everyone to finish watching the film and come. And when they come, my lawyer is the first to meet with me and say: “Because of your cover in Maxim magazine, you are fired from your show.” “
“That’s when I actually start crying,” Melissa added. “And then my father comes and hugs me. And I don't see my dad often, so what if he hugs me? I was like, “Oh my God, my dad is hugging me.” It was just a dramatic night.”
