The Walt Disney Company has entered into a licensing agreement with OpenAI that brings Disney characters and imagery to Sora, the company's artificial intelligence short video generator. According to joint statement published A three-year licensing agreement between the two companies will allow people to create and share videos featuring “more than 200” animated characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars.
Notably, the statement added that “the agreement does not include any similarity of talent or voices.”
As part of the agreement, Disney will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and become a “major customer” of the company.
Fairplay, a nonprofit advocacy group dedicated to reducing children's screen time, released a statement saying Disney's OpenAI agreement “betrays children.”
“OpenAI claims that children are not allowed to use Sora, yet here they are luring young children onto their platform by using some of their favorite characters. “Shame on the House of Mouse for aiding and abetting OpenAI's efforts to attract young children to its unsafe platform and products,” the statement said.
Disney and OpenAI said in a statement that both companies share a commitment to protecting the rights of creators while “maintaining strict controls to prevent the creation of illegal or harmful content.”
Sora users will be able to take advantage of the agreement starting in 2026.
