Montreal developer Call Studios introduced a new Dungeons and Dragons adventure game called Warlock.
In the cinematic teaser shown at The Game Awards 2025, we can see the main sorceress Katri casting spells among classics. D&D creatures like the Undead. While no gameplay was shown, the trailer confirmed that a gameplay reveal will take place next summer, leading to a 2027 launch. Canadian Trisha Helfer, who played EDI in Mass Effect games, also took to the stage to confirm that she is starring in the game.
Ahead of The Game Awards, MobileSyrup I had to take part in a Q&A with Invoke to learn more about the game. First of all, this is not an RPG, dude. D&D Baldur's Gate 3instead focusing on creating a third-person action-adventure game set in an open world. Jeff Hattem, VP of Creative at Invoke, says: Warlock will allow players to use “immersive, expressive magic” in “all areas of the game”, including combat, exploration and puzzle solving.
He notes that some examples of this can be seen in the trailer.
“In terms of spells, there were a couple of spells you saw in the teaser – there are black tentacles that you can use to control a crowd of monsters. There's also a gust of wind spell that you use to create some space. So it's not always about the damage. It's also about the creative edge that these spells can give you against monsters, traveling the world, solving puzzles, solving environmental problems and exploring treacherous terrain,” says Hattem. “So the same spells are used in different ways, and players have to figure out what those spell restrictions are and what they can do with them to their advantage.”
Invoke adds that although there are many D&D fans on the team, it doesn't try to recreate the board game, and it doesn't have dice rolling mechanics like Baldur's Gate. Instead, studio head Dominique Guay says the team “leaning heavily on lore and universe D&D“
The team itself also has an impressive history, drawing on talent from Montreal's gaming industry. Both Guy and Hattem previously worked at Ubisoft on various franchises and note that other members of their roughly 200-person studio have worked on games in the action-adventure, open world and immersive genres.
In terms of plot, Invoke doesn't reveal much yet, with Guai simply saying that Warlock focuses on Katri's “personal and urgent” search. D&D fans also learn that the warlock has a patron, a powerful otherworldly being who grants him powers, and Invoke teased the importance of the relationship Katri builds with her own patron over the course of the story. Additionally, Invoke confirmed that you will only be controlling Katri and not the entire group, although they noted that you will still meet many other characters besides the patron.
While we wait for the gameplay announcement in the summer of 2026, Hattem suggested fans take a closer look at the teaser.
“I mentioned how warlocks make a pact. There are references to this pact and magical spells, including rituals, and there are also some symbols that have double meanings,” he said. “And that’s what’s interesting about what people can learn.”
