Lane Kiffin’s LSU assistants return to Ole Miss to help in playoff

Lane Kiffin is already assembling his LSU coaching staffbut four of his current assistants who left Ole Miss to join him in Baton Rouge are reportedly returning to Oxford.

RebelsAfter finishing the year 11-1 with Kiffin as head coach, they are competing in the College Football Playoff, which begins next weekend.

As a result, LSU assistants are joining offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. at Ole Miss to help him and new coach Pete Golding prepare for the team's first-round matchup against the Tulane Green Wave. via ESPN.

Tight ends coach Joe Cox, wide receivers coach George McDonald, assistant quarterbacks coach Dane Stevens and wide receivers coach Sawyer Jordan arrived on the Ole Miss campus Monday, according to the release.

Kiffin ultimately allowed the coaches to return to Oxford to help “the staff and players make the most of their upcoming playoff run,” the Rebels' first accomplishment since the inception of the CFP.

This is a familiar opponent for the Rebels, as they faced Tulane earlier this season in a 45-10 rout on Sept. 20.

However, the divorce between Kiffin and Ole Miss was not the amicable one, as Rebels athletic director Keith Carter disputed several of Kiffin's statements about being banned from coaching Ole Miss in the CFP.

“There are a lot of things that I’m not sure about publicly that are completely accurate,” Carter said. SuperTalk Mississippi.

Carter said Kiffin and his representatives were notified weeks in advance that coaching Ole Miss in any potential playoff games would not be possible.

In his farewell message to the Rebels, Kiffin said he had asked to “end a historic six-season streak with the team this year by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs,” but Carter denied this, “even though the team also asked him to let me continue to coach.”

But one of Kiffin's players denied that claim as well. Quarterback Brycen Sanders quickly headed toward X after seeing Kiffin's announcement.
