Canadians can now watch music videos on Spotify

Spotify is bringing its music video beta to Canada following the launch of the feature in Canada. almost 100 markets last year.

The expansion gives more people access to Spotify's catalog of official music videos, including studio versions, live performances and covers. In addition to Canada, the music video beta will expand to the United States, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Uganda and Venezuela.

For starters, Premium subscribers will be able to access the beta version of the music video by the end of December. To access the video, open the Spotify app on your device of choice, select a supported track, and tap Switch to Video. (Spotify says music videos will work on TVs, desktops, iOS and Android apps.)

When you do the above, the music video should start playing from where the song left off. Users can also access full screen mode on mobile devices by rotating it to landscape mode. And to return to normal listening, just click “Switch to Audio.”

Spotify users can watch music videos in several ways. First, there will be a “Related Music Videos” section that listeners can browse through. Artist profiles will also have videos under the Music tab. Listeners will be able to watch playlists by video genre, such as “Video Hits of the 90s” or “Hip-Hop Throwbacks.”

While I'm sure this update will please music video fans, I'm sure some will also be disappointed by it. I've recently started listening to more podcasts on Spotify, but I've been increasingly annoyed by Spotify's insistence on playing a video stream of podcasts. As someone who usually listens to podcasts in the background while I game or work, it drives me crazy when a video plays without an easy way to turn it off. We hope Spotify's music video promotions aren't as annoying.
