Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Activision just announced that this will be the last time games from the same sub-franchise will be released in consecutive years.
This means no more Black Opera 8 next year. Just kidding, but this will no longer be an option in the future, the company said in a new blog post published this evening. But at the same time CoD hopes to be more innovative and “unique” every year.
It started with Modern Warfare III in 2023 to continue Modern Warfare 2 (2022), and continued this year with BO7 fall the year after Black Ops 6. This formula is clearly not working to some extent (sales this year are likely much lower than expected), so changes are being made.
“Call of Duty enjoys a long-standing success thanks to all of you, a passionate community that demands excellence and deserves nothing less,” Activision said. “We also know that for some of you, the franchise has not fully lived up to your expectations. To be clear, we know what you expect, and rest assured that we will meet and exceed those expectations as we move forward.”
Currently the focus is on BO7 live seasons before CoD This will happen next fall in 2026, and the company said fan feedback will “help shape our seasonal updates in the coming months,” adding updates at least every month to add more content to the game and keep players interested.
But first, BO7 Multiplayer and Zombies will have a free weekend next week along with double XP because the company said “we'd like you to experience the game for yourself and decide for yourself.”
“We will not rest until Black Ops 7 etakes its place as one of the best Black Operas games we've ever created,” reads the blog. And the game is off to a good start from Season 1, especially when it comes to BO7 Warzone integration and a huge number of things to play in all modes.
2026s CoD rumored name Modern Warfare 4which, at least for now, confirms that we won't get Modern Warfare 5 next year. This move in itself sounds like a good idea to help each individual game separate itself a little more from the previous one and keep things from getting too monotonous for too long.
“To be clear, the future Call of Duty is very strong and we believe our best days are yet to come given the depth and talent of our development teams,” Activision said. “We are building the next era Call of Duty, and it delivers exactly what you want, as well as some surprises that push the franchise and genre forward. We look forward to welcoming you, listening to you and moving forward together.”
Since this is not specified, it is safe to assume that CoD will continue to release games annually, just in alternating series, as it did until 2023.
