Sir Keir Starmer leads tributes to armed forces member killed in Ukraine

Sir Keir Starmer led tributes to a member of the British armed forces who died in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister expressed his “deepest sympathy and condolences” to the serviceman who died while testing a new defense capability, the Ministry of Defense said.

In a tribute posted on social media, Sir Keir said: “My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the family of the member of our armed forces who sadly lost his life today.

“Their service and sacrifices will never be forgotten.”

The “tragic accident” occurred on Tuesday morning as a serviceman watched his Ukrainian colleagues test a new defensive capability far from the front line, the Defense Ministry said in a statement published on X.

The MoD said: “It is with deep regret that we must report that a member of the British Armed Forces was killed in Ukraine this morning, Tuesday 9 December.

“He was injured in a tragic accident while watching Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability far from the front lines.

“The family have been notified and our thoughts are with them at this sad and difficult time.”

Writing on X, Defense Secretary John Healey said: “Devastated by the death of a British serviceman in Ukraine.

“My thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues as they grieve the loss of a loved one. Our hearts go out to them.”

Shadow Defense Secretary James Cartlidge said: “I am deeply saddened to hear the tragic news that a UK service member has died in Ukraine this morning.

“My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Britain has previously acknowledged that there are a “small number” of troops in the country who mainly provide security for the British diplomatic presence and support the Ukrainian armed forces.

The Press Association understands the fatal incident is not being assessed as the result of hostile fire.
