A new report on the lawsuit over DLC cancellation for Aspyr's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 remaster has revealed much more details about the KOTOR remake and what Lucasfilm Games are scheduled for later. It appears that a full remake of KOTOR 2 is also in the planning stages, which will feature many fixes to the game's original, infamously unfinished ending.
That's according to Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly, who spoke about the project while testifying about the missing DLC in March of this year. Reilly's comments just appeared in a new Game file reportwhere he discusses “Juliet”, the codename for the KOTOR 2 remake.
“'Juliet' was the code name for the project where we were going to do a complete remake of KOTOR II with modern graphics, modern gameplay, you know, keep the story, the characters and the general content – the general content of KOTOR II, but remake it for modern hardware and modern machines with updated graphics and all that kind of stuff,” Reilly explained. “We discussed this with Aspir.”
It is noteworthy that official website for Mad Head Games reports that the studio is working on another “unannounced AAA game based on a well-known and beloved IP,” and a KOTOR remake would certainly fit in there. There were also unrest recently rumored the imminent release of an Old Republic-flavored game, and while those rumors weren't confirmed, the upcoming Game Awards on December 11th would be the perfect platform for a KOTOR remake revival.
Such an announcement would be even more exciting if a sequel remake were to follow. KOTOR 2 came out in 2004 with an ending that many players, myself included, considered disappointing and unsatisfying at the time. Shortly after the game released on PC, modders discovered evidence in the game files that much of the ending content and some other elements of the game had been cut before release, likely due to time constraints placed on developer Obsidian.
After years of work, fans eventually released a “Restored Contents” mod that implements many of the story elements and other features that the original developers cut from the game. When Aspyr released the KOTOR 2 remaster for Switch in 2022, it planned to also release the RCM project as DLC – the first time console players will have the opportunity to play it. The DLC release was eventually cancelled, prompting a false advertising lawsuit against Aspyr.
The details of this lawsuit are the main topic of a new Game File report, but in short, it looks like the DLC was canceled because DisneyRussian lawyers were afraid of their ability to fully protect the rights to the work of modders.
According to Reilly, even with development on the KOTOR 1 remake stalled, the project is “technically still in the plans” and will not be subject to the same legal issues that led to the destruction of restored DLC content. “The plan was that we would repurpose the content that was in RCM as it applied to Star Wars in this Juliet project,” Reilly said. We hope this plan remains intact.
