Comedian, actor and podcaster Michael Rapaport is outraged by Hollywood celebrities who signed a letter demanding Israel release a convicted terrorist serving five life sentences for murders during the Second Intifada.
letter The Free Marwan campaign is calling on the United Nations and “governments of the world” to “actively pursue the release of Marwan Barghouti” from Israeli prison, saying he suffered “abuse and denial of legal rights while in custody” and insisting that his freedom is key to reviving the Palestinian statehood process.
Among the celebrities who have signed the call to free the terrorist are writers Margaret Atwood, Philip Pullman, Zadie Smith, actors Sir Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Josh O'Connor and Mark Ruffalo, TV presenter Gary Lineker, billionaire Sir Richard Branson, as well as musicians Sting, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Brian Eno, Stephen Fry and other representatives of the British and American world entertainment.
In 2004, an Israeli court convicted Barghouti, who was the leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades and head of the Fatah party, on five counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
For his part, Rapaport expressed deep disgust at celebrities for demanding that Israel release this “terrorist animal” from prison.
“I'm tripping over this, but there is an animal, a terrorist animal, a jihadist terrorist animal, Marwan Barghouti, who is a convicted murderer, who has planned and carried out numerous terrorist attacks. Killing dozens of innocent civilians,” Rapaport said in his speech. I'm Rapaport The podcast came out on Friday.
“And now you have a cast fighting for his release as if he were the Central Park Five or Nelson Mandela or an innocent convicted murderer sitting on death row,” he continued. “Richard Branson, Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sting. Oh no, every step you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you, Sting, fuck you.”
“200 people signed a letter trying to free this piece of squeak. Marwan Barghouti and I are thinking to ourselves: Do you know how many innocent Americans are in prison?” Rapaport added, speaking about Americans in prison here in the United States. who may have been wrongfully convicted.
“Let me tell you something about your little hero, Marwan Barghouti. Sting, Mark Ruffalo and the rest of you, he's not coming out. Annie Lennox. Ian McKellen, Tilda Swinton, Alan Cummings, another one!” he exclaimed.
Rapaport paid special attention to actor and gay rights activist Alan Cummings, who chaired the Tel Aviv LGBTQ Pride Parade. Rapaport criticized Cummings for refusing to travel to Palestinian-controlled areas while he was in Israel.
“I know he didn't go to the West Bank, Judea and Samaria. I know he didn't go to Ramallah, Bethlehem or Jenin, because there is no LGBT pride in those places. There is none in Palestine,” Rapaport said.
The podcaster continued: “Your guy won't come out. He's an animal, he's a dog, he's a killer. Okay? And if you really care about innocent people, there are so many people in your countries you could fight for.”
“But we're talking about Jews, okay? This guy in 2002, this piece of shit, helped organize a bombing at a seafood market. Children's limbs were strewn across the floor while parents screamed over the bodies of their babies,” Rapaport said of one of the crimes for which Marwan Barghouti was convicted.
“Disco, 35 teenagers burned to death, he did it, and you're trying to get the damn guy out of jail?” he spoke about another crime committed by Barghouti.
“Benedict Cumberbunch, Sting, Javier Bardem and the rest of you are disgusting cocksuckers,” Rapaport concluded. “I don't understand. I don't understand. People love scumbags.”
