And at one point during the 42-minute conversation, David and Jonathan bonded over the fact that they were both filming mid-air kissing scenes.
Of course, David played the main role. Superman in James Gunn's 2025 release, and Jonathan played Fiyero in Evil: For good.
In the musical released last month, Fiyero carried in the air The Elphabs (Cynthia Erivo) as they sing “As Long As You're Mine.”
And during their conversation, David told Jonathan that he was amazed at how “masculine” he looked during the scene. “You had a more difficult task. Cynthia is carrying you. She is levitating you,” he began.
“Every man would think: It’s impossible to look masculine, strong and in control when you’re being levitated by a woman,” he continued, to which Jonathan responded, “My greatest privilege.”
“Somehow, in that moment when she lifts you up by the arms… You somehow maintain your masculinity,” David said, adding, “It was amazing.”
“Well done, mate. Because it's so much easier when you're carrying a girl,” he told Jonathan.
In response, Jonathan paused briefly and then said, “Oh my God, yes. It was a huge honor. And also, I mean, listen. If I could, I would be carried by both Cynthia and Ari for the rest of my life. What a pleasure to be able to come and contribute and share a moment like that.”
David's comments quickly went viral and received mixed reactions online. “I understand what he was trying to say, but the way he said it,” one person tweeted. “Johnny tries to distract David from a weird comment about masculinity by saying it's his greatest privilege and that both Cynthia and Ari will happily carry it, and then when David doubles down it's painful to watch, ngl,” another user said.
Several other users rushed to David's defense, with one person letter“Being vulnerable and vulnerable is not what society deems masculine, so David, as a man, compliments Jonathan. Men are allowed to speak their minds about their overall experiences, but that doesn't make him anti-woman/feminine.”
“He's literally saying that SOCIETY AND ESPECIALLY MOST MEN would consider this a humiliation??? and is this true??” one more post readand another user repeated“Isn't he literally saying that the film does a good job of conveying how he can still appear masculine despite the female character having so much more power and control over him, he seems to be praising the film for not sticking to toxic male roles.”
