Trump says Zelenskyy hasn’t read latest Russia-Ukraine peace plan

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said he was “a little disappointed that President Zelensky hasn't read this proposal yet.”

It is unclear exactly which version of the peace plan Trump had in mind.

“His people like it. He doesn't. Russia is fine with it,” Trump said on the red carpet at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington.

“You know, Russia… I think I would prefer the whole country, if you think about it. But Russia, I think, is okay with it, but I'm not sure Zelensky is okay with it. His people love it, but he hasn't read it.”

Despite Trump's claim that Moscow was “satisfied” with the latest version of the agreement, the Kremlin said otherwise.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said on Sunday that the American side would have to make “radical changes” to the draft on “certain issues.”

Zelensky's chief negotiator said he would brief the Ukrainian leader on Monday after the latest round of talks.

“The main task of the Ukrainian team was to obtain from the American side complete information about their conversation in Moscow and all draft current proposals in order to discuss them in detail with the President of Ukraine,” Rustem Umerov said in a post on X. “We are working as intensively as possible,” he added.

Zelensky's office did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment.

Zelensky said in his Sunday evening address that he had spoken with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who held five hours of talks with Putin in Moscow last week. “The American ambassadors know Ukraine’s main positions, and the conversation was constructive, although not easy,” he added.

In a separate interview on Monday, Zelensky said elements of the U.S. plan require further discussion on a number of “sensitive issues.” There is still no “unified” view on the fate of Donbass, the industrial eastern region that Putin wants to fully preserve even though it is still under partial Ukrainian control, he said. told Bloomberg News.
