TTC wants to put flipbook-like ads in subway tunnels

More advertising may be appearing in the Toronto subway, this time in a classic style.

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is considering placing flipbook advertising on tunnel walls as part of a strategy to generate non-fare revenue. as per proposal it is due to be considered by the TTC board next week.

According to the proposal, transit agency considering 15-year contract with Canadian advertising agency Adtrekmedwhich installed “moving in-tunnel advertising” on parts of Vancouver's SkyTrain in 2022. Vertical lights will be installed on the walls of the tunnel, which will look like a video from moving subway cars.

TTS, which, according to Pulp and paper mill, is drawing on about $35 million from its reserves to cover its 2026 operating budget, aims to “optimize advertising revenue opportunities” by adding what it calls six “tunnel advertising systems” to subway tunnels ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Currently, TTC is negotiating with Adtrackmedia. According to Pulp and paper mill, City staff said the company approached the transit agency in 2022 and that the TTC has been monitoring ad usage in other cities (including Vancouver) for more than two years.

Under the proposal, TTC would generate approximately $32 million annually from both traditional and static advertising through an agreement with Pattison Outdoor Advertising LP. This includes both printing and packaging.

Advertising is not the only change in the tunnels of the Third Transport Ring; telecommunications service providers such as Rogers, Bell, Telusand even Public mobile added wireless or 5G coverage to the transit agency's subway system..
