Supreme Court to take up challenge to Trump’s birthright citizenship order

Supreme Court agreed Friday to hear oral arguments over the legality of President Donald Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship in the United States, a high-profile case that, if passed, would have a profound impact on the lives of millions of Americans and legal U.S. residents.

Trump signed decree on his first day back in office in January, it would end birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented parents in the U.S. or parents who have legal but temporary status in the country.

The order seeks to clarify the 14th Amendment, which states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state in which they reside.”

More than 22 US states and immigrant rights groups have sued the Trump administration to block the birthright citizenship transition, arguing in court papers that the order is both unconstitutional and “unprecedented.”

And to date, no court has upheld the Trump administration's order banning birthright citizenship, although several district courts have blocked it, including following a Supreme Court decision on a similar issue.
