As more than half of the NBA's 30 teams have played 21 or more games, we are reaching the end of the season's first quarter, which can mean only one thing: It is high time for our first report card of 2025-26.
Here we grade on a scale against expectations. If, for example, the Washington Wizards (3-17) get a good grade, it is because we expected them to lose — they want to lose — and they are doing a good job of it. If, say, the Cleveland Cavaliers (13-9) get poor marks, it is because we expected more from them.

We start in the Eastern Conference, where the Cavaliers and New York Knicks (13-7) — two teams everyone expected to lead the East, and two teams that remain betting favorites to emerge from the bracket — are among seven teams sitting on 12-15 wins, all trailing the first-place Detroit Pistons (17-4).

Not one East team has played in a way that can convince us the conference can compete in an NBA Finals with the West's winner, but the bracket is as wide open as it has been in some time — perhaps ever. It is not out of the question to think, if Jayson Tatum returns this season, the Boston Celtics (12-9) could be a threat. Likewise, who is to say the Miami Heat (14-7), Toronto Raptors (15-7), Orlando Magic (13-8), Atlanta Hawks (13-9) and even Philadelphia 76ers (11-9) could not win a first-round playoff series?
Before we get there the Pistons must decide if they are all in, if an increasingly rumored deal for Lauri Markkanen could come to fruition. They have the assets to make a trade if it comes time to think they are, indeed, one player away from more serious championship contention. And we are getting there.

But first … a first-quarter report card for the NBA's East. (West to come.) …
Atlanta Hawks • Boston Celtics • Brooklyn Nets • Charlotte Hornets • Chicago Bulls • Cleveland Cavaliers • Detroit Pistons • Indiana Pacers • Miami Heat • Milwaukee Bucks • New York Knicks • Orlando Magic • Philadelphia 76ers • Toronto Raptors • Washington Wizards
-
1Q MVP: Jalen Johnson (23-10-7 on 54/41/79)
-
Best lineup: Johnson • Nickeil Alexander-Walker • Dyson Daniels • Zaccharie Risacher • Kristaps Porziņģis (+25 in 122 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Toronto, 109-97 (lost as 2.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 6-7 • Against losing teams: 7-2
Comments: The Hawks are 11-6 in Trae Young's absence, owners of a rock-solid +4.5 net rating since Halloween, including a top-six defense in that span. … Jalen Johnson is an awesome basketball player. … Nickeil Alexander-Walker has been filling in admirably for Young, playing with those three young wings — Johnson, Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risacher — and Kristaps Porziņģis (whose health also remains a concern). … What might they look like in Young's return, which is at least another two weeks away? They could be a better offensive team and still dangerous defensively. Or it'll be time to trade Young.

1Q MVP: Jaylen Brown (29-6-5 on 50/35/77)
-
Best lineup: Brown • Payton Pritchard • Derrick White • Sam Hauser • Neemias Queta (+40 in 53 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Brooklyn, 113-105 (lost as 14.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 7-7 • Against losing teams: 5-2
Comments: That loss to the Nets and another one to the Jazz loom large for a team that, at least by some advanced metrics, should be better than its record. … All in all, Boston would probably have taken this start in the absence of an injured Jayson Tatum (Achilles), especially since Derrick White and Payton Pritchard could not buy a basket in the first few weeks of the season. … Jaylen Brown has been a beast as a No. 1 option, far better than most everyone anticipated. … The offense is good, even as the Celtics still search for their shooting stroke. … That defense, though — yuck. They need a rim-protecting big man.

1Q MVP: Michael Porter Jr. (25-7-3 on 49/38/82)
-
Best lineup: Porter • Cam Thomas •. Terrance Mann • Tyrese Martin • Nic Claxton (+8 in 19 minutes)
-
Worst loss: at Charlotte, 136-117 (lost as 5-point underdogs)
-
Against .500+ teams: 1-14 • Against losing teams: 3-2
Comments: The Nets began the season by drafting five rookies in the first round of the NBA draft and have played accordingly, losing by double digits per 100 possessions. They would be the East's worst team if not for the Wizards, and that is pretty much what they wanted. … Michael Porter Jr., as relatively quiet as he has been kept in Brooklyn, is adapting quite nicely to being the best player on a bad team. … The Nets get up a high volume of 3-pointers for a team that does not play very fast, despite being a young roster (and a poor shooting one). … At least Brooklyn beat Washington in a recent Toilet Bowl?

1Q MVP: Kon Knueppel (18-6-3 on 47/42/90)
-
Best lineup: Knueppel • LaMelo Ball • Miles Bridges • Brandon Miller • Ryan Kalkbrenner (+2 in 39 minutes)
-
Worst loss: at Pacers, 127-118 (lost as 1.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 1-10 • Against losing teams: 5-5
Comments: Small forward Kon Knueppel and center Ryan Kalkbrenner were good draft picks. Each contributes as expected. For Knueppel, the fourth overall pick, that means prolific efficiency from the 3-point line, solid rebounding, some good playmaking and competitiveness on defense. They are winning players, and the Hornets have not had many of them. … Speaking of which, LaMelo Ball is an enigma. Does he want to play winning basketball? Does he want to do it for these Hornets? … I think Charles Lee is a good coach, and I think there is some talent in Charlotte. I am just not sure it makes sense together.

1Q MVP: Josh Giddey (21-10-9 on 47/40/74)
-
Best lineup: Giddey • Tre Jones • Kevin Huerter • Matas Buzelis • Nikola Vučević (+16 in 26 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Miami, 143-107 (lost as 2.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 6-6 • Against losing teams: 3-5
Comments: From top to bottom, a lot of Bulls have played pretty well, especially Josh Giddey and Nikola Vučević, the latter of whom is playing like someone who is auditioning for other teams. … I found Vooch's comments after a narrow victory against the Wizards — how they played “soft” for three quarters, and how he chided his young teammates for celebrating the win — very telling. While they were winning at the start of the season, they are not now, and they should act accordingly. They should want to be the winners they were at the start of the season. … But, and I hate to say, “I told you so,” it was all a mirage.

1Q MVP: Donovan Mitchell (31-5-6 on 51/39/83)
-
Best lineup: Mitchell • Darius Garland • De'Andre Hunter • Evan Mobley • Jarrett Allen (+18 in 43 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Toronto, 126-113 (lost as 7.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 4-9 • Against losing teams: 9-0
Comments: Darius Garland cannot stay healthy. That, for starters, has been an impediment to the Cavaliers' success. His return to stardom would do wonders for an offense that generates a lot of 3-pointers but cannot convert them. … The return of Max Strus would not hurt, either … Donovan Mitchell is among the league's very best players — flat-out. … If only Evan Mobley could achieve that level of superstardom. Do not get me wrong. He is a very talented basketball player. I just think the difference in personality between Mobley and Kevin Garnett is the difference between Mobley ever becoming KG.

1Q MVP: Cade Cunningham (28-7-9 on 46/30/82)
-
Best lineup: Cunningham • Duncan Robinson • Ausar Thompson • Tobias Harris • Jalen Duren (+33 in 113 minutes)
-
Worst loss: at Boston, 117-114 (lost as 3-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 8-3 • Against losing teams: 9-1
Comments: The Pistons have played as well as we could have imagined, and Cade Cunningham is a bona fide top-five MVP candidate (in an entirely different conversation that is quite loaded with talent). … Detroit's losses are understandable. … The Pistons have done this without Jaden Ivey, without Cunningham for a few games, without Tobias Harris for even more, and without Malik Beasley, whose status as it relates to the NBA's gambling scandal remains a mystery. … They sure could use Beasley's shooting — or someone besides Duncan Robinson's flamethrowing. … Can you imagine if a Thompson twin had a jumper? Man.

1Q MVP: Pascal Siakam (24-7-4 on 48/33/67)
-
Best lineup: Siakam • Aaron Nesmith • Jarace Walker • Quenton Jackson • Isaiah Jackson (+20 in 35 minutes)
-
Worst loss: at Utah, 152-128 (lost as 2.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 1-12 • Against losing teams: 3-5
Comments: It is hard to say if the Pacers wanted to be this way. They surely began the season with higher hopes, even in the absence of an injured Tyrese Haliburton, and even after Myles Turner's free-agency departure, considering they reached the 2025 NBA Finals on depth and style. … Nobody else can stay healthy but Pascal Siakam (knock on wood). … Andrew Nembhard has been good since his return from injury, but not quite as good as they need him to be. … Maybe this is all a blessing in disguise for Indiana, as the Pacers, who only reacquired their first-round pick in June, could use another top talent.

1Q MVP: Norman Powell (25-3-4 on 51/46/88)
-
Best lineup: Powell • Davion Mitchell • Pelle Larsson • Andrew Wiggins • Bam Adebayo (+33 in 48 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Cleveland, 130-116 (lost as 5.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 5-7 • Against losing teams: 9-0
Comments: The Heat play fast and purposefully, only without all the pick-and-roll. … Too many have shined to name everyone, but let us shout out Norman Powell, who may get more serious All-Star consideration in the East than he did for the Clippers in the West last season. … … Welcome to our NBA consciousness, Pelle Larson and Kel'el Ware.. … And welcome back, Jaime Jaquez Jr. … No team has benefited more from opponents' poor shooting luck. … How about Tyler Herro's return from injury. He has, so far, fit seamlessly into a system that had some questioning about how he would conform to it.

1Q MVP: Giannis Antetokounmpo (31-11-6 on 64/44/63)
-
Best lineup: Antetokounmpo • Ryan Rollins • AJ Green • Kyle Kuzma • Myles Turner (+50 in 59 minutes)
-
Worst loss: at Washington, 129-126 (lost as 10.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 3-9 • Against losing teams: 6-4
Comments: When Giannis Antetokounmpo is on the floor, the Bucks are outscoring opponents by 8.8 points per 100 possessions, operating like the NBA's best offense. When Antetokounmpo is off the court, the Bucks are being outscored by 11 points per 100 possessions, operating like the league's worst offense. It is that simple. … Either way, the Bucks are not a good defensive team, and that is with the addition of Myles Turner. … Give Milwaukee credit: When Antetokounmpo is drawing all that attention, the Bucks can shoot the hell out of the ball. Will they continue to? They better, if they want Antetokounmpo to stay.

1Q MVP: Jalen Brunson (28-3-7 on 47/36/86)
-
Best lineup: Brunson • Josh Hart • Mikal Bridges • OG Anunoby • Karl-Anthony Towns (+22 in 40 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Orlando, 124-107 (lost as 3.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 5-5 • Against losing teams: 8-2
Comments: The Knicks own an elite offense and an increasingly stout defense, and if you had told them that they would hold those ratings a quarter of the way into the season, they probably would have been satisfied. This is how they can win in the playoffs. … If only that combination of Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns was not so attackable on defense. The Knicks still have not come up with a solution for that. … But Brunson and Towns really are special offensive talents. … What happens when foes start making shots? … I think, overall, Mike Brown has had a positive influence on the Knicks as their coach.

1Q MVP: Franz Wagner (23-6-4 on 48/34/83)
-
Best lineup: Wagner • Jalen Suggs • Desmond Bane • Paolo Banchero • Wendell Carter Jr. (+45 in 101 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Chicago, 110-98 (lost as 6-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 7-7 • Against losing teams: 6-1
Comments: A rocky start for the Magic, who began the year 1-4, bottom 10 on both offense and defense. Since then, they are top 10 on both ends. The defense is no surprise. The offense, though, is a revelation. … The Magic are outscoring opponents by 8.2 points per 100 possessions when Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs, an underrated backcourt, are on the court together. … Orlando has surged in spite of the absence of Paolo Banchero. Or perhaps because of the absence of Banchero. That is the question with Orlando: Can Banchero and Franz Wagner drive winning together? They are only 23 and 24 years old, respectively.

1Q MVP: Tyrese Maxey (33-5-8 on 47/39/88)
-
Best lineup: Maxey • VJ Edgecombe • Quentin Grimes • Kelly Oubre Jr. • Andre Drummond (+22 in 39 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Orlando, 144-103 (lost as 4.5-point underdogs)
-
Against .500+ teams: 4-8 • Against losing teams: 7-1
Comments: Considering how well the 76ers started, and how impressive Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe have been as a young backcourt duo, it is a little disappointing to see them so close to .500. … Joel Embiid and Paul George have barely played. On one hand, that is encouraging, since you could imagine them both contributing at some point. On the other, it is entirely discouraging, because there is little hope that they can sustain their health for an entire season. … They have been about as good as we anticipated, if not a little better, but we still do not know what we are getting night to night from Philly.

1Q MVP: Scottie Barnes (20-8-5 on 52/42/85)

Best lineup: Barnes • Immanuel Quickley • RJ Barrett • Brandon Ingram • Jakob Poeltl (+18 in 166 minutes)
-
Worst loss: at Charlotte, 118-111 (lost as 7.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 6-4 • Against losing teams: 9-3
Comments: The Raptors have been flat-out good, which is not something I figured them for at the start of the season. That is what happens, I guess, when Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram play to the best of their abilities. … It is a wonder what a decent defense can do for a team, and Toronto — after rating 15th on that end last season — has been better than decent. The Raptors have benefited from their opponents' poor shooting. Might that all change in the second quarter of this 82-game campaign? … After all, they have cleaned up against a poor schedule. Following a nine-game win streak, Toronto has been teetering.

1Q MVP: Alex Sarr (19-9-3 on 52/35/64)
-
Best lineup: Sarr • CJ McCollum • Tre Johnson • Kyshawn George • Khris Middleton (+22 in 31 minutes)
-
Worst loss: vs. Brooklyn, 129-106 (lost as 2.5-point favorites)
-
Against .500+ teams: 1-11 • Against losing teams: 2-6
Comments: The Wizards are nearly pulling off the rare feat of rating dead last on both offense and defense. They are on pace for one of the worst net ratings (-14.1) ever. This is by design, as Washington would like to add another high-end draft pick to its young core. … A mix of its best veterans (CJ McCollum and Khris Middleton) and most promising young talents (Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George and Tre Johnson) has been an early recipe for success, which is an encouraging sign for the future. … For such a bad offensive team, the Wizards are not bad at shooting. … But in terms of losing, they are very, very good.
