The union representing Air Transat pilots said Wednesday that its members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike.

While the results give the pilots' union governing body the right to call a strike as early as Dec. 10, that alone does not constitute immediate notice of a strike, the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) said in a press release.

Negotiations between ALPA and the airline began in January. The union representative said it was seeking a collective agreement that would protect job security and improve the situation.working conditions, wages and quality of life.”

Both sides withdrew from the reconciliation agreement on November 18. They are currently in a 21-day cooling-off period that ends Dec. 10, according to the union. CBC News has reached out to Air Transat for a statement.

“This vote sends a clear message to Air Transat leadership: we are united, determined and have won a contract that reflects today's industry standards, not 2015 standards,” said Bradley Small, Chairman of Air Transat ALPA's Chief Executive Board.

“Let's be clear: We don't want to pull punches. Our goal remains to reach a fair agreement at the negotiating table,” Small said, calling on leadership to “negotiate seriously.”
